Custom Sign Design of a Directory for Summit Health Montclair, NJ

Posted by Gary Baron on Thu, Jun 16, 2022 @ 08:00 PM

The Montclair Hub of Summit Health takes up two floors at 1 Seymour Street. Parking is available at the West Parking Garage. Because it is always stressful for first-time visitors to find their way around, the client asked our shop to develop a custom sign design for a directory in Montclair, NJ, fabricate the product, and install it.

Directories are Essential for Wayfinding

A well-designed directory gives customers, patients, and visitors a clear understanding of how to find the clinic and its offices. For this product, we worked with a 3D backdrop that juts out from the wall and immediately catches the attention. Next, we added the address to the top of the panel.

For the two floors that Summit Health uses, we created an extensive listing of the departments there. We separated them by floor. Each floor features the clinic’s name, logo, and unique listings. To ensure visitors do not select floors where the clinic does not operate, we added listings of the other floors in smaller letters and numbers to highlight the operations there.

Look closely, and you will notice that we used individual stripes for the departments. Doing so allows the client to make changes to their lineup of services, which we can easily accommodate by moving a line, turning it over to hide the print, or adding more information. The finished product is now flush-mounted to the wall, where it looks professional and makes wayfinding a snap.

Other Types of Directories to Choose

For this project, we put directories on each parking garage floor to help patients navigate the venue. However, the wall-mounted 3D directory is only one choice.

  • Kiosk. Shaped like a triangle for maximum readability, this type of structure we would construct typically in retail operations near escalators. For these, you might choose a smooth surface design with printed vinyl overlays. It lets you make changes to your venue’s setup.
  • Blade signs. If your hallways have a lot of foot traffic, consider the installation of a blade sign directory. It displays above customers' heads, lets us incorporate arrows to point the way, and can also accommodate color coordination for departments.
  • Building directory. The building directory is frequently commissioned by a property management company or venue owner. It continues the interior decor, might feature the building’s name and location, and could also highlight the property management’s company. Individual tenants are named with movable imprinted strips of acrylic. When installed with chic brushed aluminum stand-offs, the sign looks great and is perfectly functional.
