With how much wraps are used to market companies, it always surprises us when we hear about or see wraps that are not cared for properly or at all. We have repaired wraps where the owner got in an accident six months after the installation, there were still grease pencil alignment marks on the wrap from the original installation. This wrap clearly had not been cleaned at all. To help you keep your wrap clean so it can represent your business well, The Sign Center has put together this little guide so you too will learn the importance of caring for your vehicle wraps.
Why You Should Care for Your Wrap
Regularly cleaning your wrap is crucial because it can make your graphics last longer in addition to keeping the car looking great. In congested industrial or urban areas and regions with high elevation, this is extra important.
There is reduced durability on the horizontal areas of the wrap in areas where there is increased pollutants, particulates, and smog in the atmosphere. The increased UV exposure results in shorter durability while the horizontal areas trap the chemicals on the surface of the material.
Compared to sea level, the UV damage is increased in mountainous, high elevation regions. Damage is more likely because there is less UV filtering because the air is thinner.
How to Clean Your Wrap
Regular cleaning that removes particulates and pollutants that can damage a wrap can reduce the effects of living in modern environments. Plus, you can get added UV protection by applying an approved wax after cleaning. Below is a great YouTube video from 3M Graphics that discusses vehicle wrap cleaning tips:
Using water and a mild detergent is the best way to clean a wrap. If there is no other way for you to clean your vehicle, then going through an automatic wash with just spray is okay. You should avoid getting a wax job at a car wash, since they typically use waxes containing petroleum distillate, which can damage your graphics. Another feature you must pass on is the automated brush. The brush can create failure points and scratches in your decals.
Hand Cleaning
Use a sponge or soft cloth to apply a water and detergent mix for hand cleaning. The detergent should be a mild one or a dedicated car wash product, according to vinyl manufacturer Avery Dennison. The detergent must have a pH balance between three and eleven, be free from alcohols or strong solvents, and be free of abrasive components.
Wrapped cars can be hand washed the same way you would a painted car. First, use clean water to rinse the vehicle. Next, start at the top of the car gently agitating the detergent-water mixture and work your way down. Avoid unnecessary scrubbing. When finished, you must thoroughly rinse the vinyl wrap. You can then use a non-abrasive towel to dry the car or it can dry naturally.
