Summit Health is a returning client. Over the years, we have designed, fabricated, and installed numerous signage solutions for its facilities. The latest project involved custom department plaques in Montclair, NJ.

The Montclair Hub of Summit Health Expands

A few years ago, we collaborated with the Montclair Hub of Summit Health on custom directory signs. At the time, the focus was on helping first-time visitors locate the departments they were looking for at a glance. Since then, the client has expanded some departments at this location. It was now time to focus on facility department plaques that would guide visitors to new places.

These plaques consist of long-lasting acrylic with white backs. We added black lettering to the front for maximum readability. We mounted the plaques with white standoffs. They now underscore the locations of departments such as “Orthopedics” and “Dermatology.” We also designed, produced, and installed basic wayfinding signs with arrows to guide visitors to the newly designated areas.

It is interesting to note that we fully customized the wayfinding systems for this Summit facility. Doing so encourages brand-building while putting the needs of patients and their families first. 

Navigating the Challenges of Designing Visitor-Friendly Wayfinding Signs for Medical and Other Facilities

The custom wall plaques in Montclair are the result of careful planning and intentional design sessions with our graphic artist. Considering that medical facilities typically have complex layouts and evolving department locations, it is critical to develop a cohesive wayfinding system that is accurate and reflects the latest changes. We map the areas we work in and double-check the use of arrows.

We also opted for high-contrast colors when designing the custom department plaques in Montclair. Doing so is instrumental for patients with visual impairments. Additionally, these signage solutions must be easy to read and be understood at a glance. Remember that it is not always the patient with an appointment who is visiting; sometimes it is also someone in possible distress. 

For the client, the signage needed to be functional, aesthetically pleasing, and consistent with other signs already on the property.
