Why HDU outlasts wood outdoors
Wood looks right and behaves badly. It absorbs moisture, moves with the seasons, splits along the grain and eventually lifts its own paint from underneath. High-density urethane carves like a dense hardwood, holds crisper detail, and does not absorb water at all - so the finish fails on its own schedule rather than being pushed off by the substrate. In a New Jersey freeze-thaw cycle that difference shows within a few winters.
Relief depth and how a sign reads
Carving depth is a legibility decision, not just an aesthetic one. Shallow relief looks refined up close and disappears from across a street. Deeper relief casts a real shadow line that keeps lettering readable in flat overcast light, which is most of the year here. Viewing distance should set the depth before anyone picks a font.

Finishing for New Jersey weather
A carved sign survives on its finish system, not its substrate. Primer, colour coats and a UV-stable clear are built up so that sun, salt and freeze-thaw work on a sacrificial top layer. Done properly, a tired sign is refinished on the existing carving years later rather than recarved from scratch.

Your design is laid out at full scale and checked at real viewing distance before any material is cut.
Relief profile & depth
Carving depth and edge profile chosen against how far away the sign is actually read from.
Carving
Cut in HDU or sandblasted to the approved profile, with detail cleaned by hand.
Paint & gilding
Built-up finish system with colour coats and, where specified, hand-applied 22 carat leaf.
Installation
Mounted to the facade, posts or structure with the correct hardware for the substrate and the exposure.
