After the completion of the project, we thought facility managers, property managers, or representatives of big corporations may have questions about obtaining ADA and wayfinding signs for their office buildings, warehouses, hospitals, or other facilities. Because compliance is essential and the design, production, and installation of ADA signs may seem shrouded in mystery to some people, we thought we'd offer up a great ADA FAQ article. So here they are, your questions - answered!

Q: Which ADA signs are required? Which ones are optional?

A: You must mark stairwells, exits, and floor locations. Moreover, label rooms that have permanent functions. Examples include conference rooms, the cafeteria, equipment storage, and safety supply rooms. Another must-have ADA sign is the bathroom marker. In contrast, you do not have to display compliant signage for building directors, individual offices featuring names, and marketing signage.

Q: What are the design requirements for compliant stair signs?

A: Whether marking stairs, suite numbers, or levels, design requirements are relatively similar.

  • Color contrast. Each ADA sign must feature high-contrast colors. For example, you might display black lettering and symbols against a brushed aluminum backdrop. If there is a particular brand color you prefer, we help you find an appropriate contrast tone.
  • Braille. Signs must feature domed, lower-case Braille II dots that are placed underneath any lettering. Because they do not have to contrast in color like the lettering, most business clients prefer to keep them in the same tone as the signage background.
  • Lettering. The text you choose to feature on compliant signs must be upper case. Moreover, it must be tactile, which means that it stands out to the touch. You may select a sans-serif font. Moreover, the individual letters must be at least 5/8 of an inch tall.

Q: What are the Rules about mounting restroom signs?

A: As a general rule of thumb, you must install a sign about 60 inches measured from the ground to the bottom of the lettering or symbol.

Q: Are there rules for ADA parking signs?

A: Yes, there are. You already know to set apart some parking spaces for accessible vehicles. Display a compliant sign that shows the international symbol of accessibility. Most businesses choose a white on blue design because it allows for a suitable contrast. By the way, these signs do not have to feature Braille II dots or even raised lettering.

Q: Should I buy customized ADA and Braille signs for large facilities in North Jersey?

A: Buying customized signs makes sense because working with technicians from The Sign Center ensures that the products not only look great but are also in full compliance with the law. Most importantly, if you already have some ADA signs on your property, we catalog them and make a note of missing signage. In addition, you can opt for ADA signs found online, however, they may only be available in black or blue where our signs can be customized to match your brand and decor.
