The last time we talked, we discussed how Summit Health introduced the new Clifton Hub to the community with custom vinyl banners. The second part of the project had us move to the interior. The client was looking for ways to guide new patients with clear and convenient hospital directory signs for Clifton, NJ.
Directing Foot Traffic for a 100,000 Square Foot Facility
It sounded like a tall order. After all, how do you help first-time visitors to a facility find their way around in such a large venue? Our graphic artist collaborated with the client on this process, and we developed a few basic types of directories.
- Vinyl letters. As patients come in, they are greeted by an overhang we used to install vinyl letters. They spell out Summit Health and divide the venue into Pavilions B and C. Arrows guide visitors to the space to make their first directional selection. Concurrently, this directory points to the elevators and stairs.
- Window-mounted directory. Look closely. Right underneath the vinyl letters, you see a directory mounted to the glass surface of an entryway. Printed in blue and white, it breaks down the departments patients can find in the different Pavilions. Moreover, they break down the information by floor, which gives the visitor confidence when searching for a specific location.
Breaking Down Wayfinding Assistance with Floor Directories
The next step was to present the patient with more detailed information once they arrived at the designated floors. A case in point is the second-floor directory that greets the visitor. It directs them to go to the left or right. The directory further breaks down the departments that are on that floor. Besides that, we added information about the other floors, which is useful when a patient is referred to a specialist there.
Did you notice that we designed the directory to have room for growth? Some blank spaces look decorative right now. However, if Summit Health were to add additional departments or facilities to the building, we could add them to the directory without removing the entire sign. This step underscores our commitment to supporting the client’s growth, even within a building.
Another directory is situated at the parking level. It focuses attention on the names of the Pavilions and the floor directories. Also, it gives information that is easy to take in at a glance. We did not overwhelm the visitor to the facility with too many details but only provided the minimum information needed to head in the right direction.
