What Is A Dimensional Letter Building Sign

Case Study: Bakehouse by Joe Murphy in Madison, NJ

Bobby Flay was no match for Joe Murphy. Murphy’s Brooklyn Blackout Cake – quite literally – took the cake. Until recently, visitors had to travel to New Providence to try a piece for themselves. However, the Bakehouse by Joe Murphy now opened another location at 82 Main Street in Madison, NJ.

The upscale bakery entrusted its signage design, production, and installation to our team. With a lightbox cabinet at the primary location, the client wanted to try dimensional letters at the new venue. They suit the area, allow custom spacing, and work well with the facade’s design. Because the building’s front features black and white, it also made sense to integrate the color play in the 3D letters.

The finished signage setup brands the location and advertises the bakery’s expansion.

What Is A Dimensional Letter

A Closer Look at Dimensional Letters

A dimensional letter building sign leverages 3D technology to display a name, logo, or other information on a building’s facade. The style elements are raised from the surface they are mounted on, creating depth and enhanced visual interest.

When our team puts together 3D letters for clients, we focus on three unique attributes.

  1. Material choice. We make dimensional letters from durable materials like acrylic, metal, outdoor-rated sign foam, or plastic. We assist clients to choose materials based on the desired aesthetics and the environment.
  2. Depth, texture, and thickness. 3D letters vary in thickness to create a shadow effect and give a sense of solidity, which makes them stand out compared to flat signage. Depths start at around one-eighth-of-an-inch and can go as thick as three inches. Material selection and manufacturing methods determine texture.
  3. Lighting. Did you know that we can illuminate dimensional letters? We can do so from behind (backlit or halo-lit) or from the front, enhancing visibility and impact, especially at night. Many 3D letters are illuminated from the exterior, such as building-mounted lights.
