Case Study: Art of the Arch & Aesthetics

Our client was after a subtle look that exuded elegance. The company, located at 221 Sherman Avenue South in Berkeley Heights, specializes in permanent makeup. Its focus is on the intersection of art and science. Therefore, the lobby sign had to exemplify this approach. We designed, produced, and installed laser-cut acrylic letters that we painted white – on a white wall.

The Monochromatic Challenge

Using white-on-white lettering can present challenges and advantages, depending on the context and application. However, from the signage design perspective, we identified several challenges our technicians had to overcome.

  1. Legibility. White-on-white lettering can be challenging to read, especially when there needs to be more contrast between the letters and the background. If the text is not clearly visible, it can lead to a frustrating user experience or make the message difficult to comprehend. We met this challenge with the use of nuanced edging.
  2. Visibility. White-on-white lettering may lack visibility in certain lighting conditions, such as bright or outdoor environments. Glare or reflections on the surface can further diminish the legibility of the text. Our technicians prevented this problem by featuring on creating a different level of reflection between the walls and the letters' fronts.
  3. Contextual readability. White-on-white letters blend into the background, making distinguishing individual letters or words harder. This challenge becomes particularly significant when the text is displayed on textured or patterned surfaces. The focus wall in this setting is smooth, eliminating the problems textures could bring to the installation.

Once we were confident that we could meet the challenges a white-on-white design would bring, our team worked on the advantages it would give the client.

Embracing the Elegance of White on White

With the details worked out, our technicians created a sign that would suit the brand message the client wanted to underscore.

  1. Aesthetics. White-on-white letters create a clean, minimalist, and sophisticated visual effect. It is particularly appealing in design contexts where a subtle, understated approach is desired.
  2. Elegance and simplicity. White-on-white conveys a sense of elegance and simplicity. It is a practical choice when the goal is to communicate a message subtly and flexibly. Even without secondary brand signage presence, this lobby sign easily conveys the message.
  3. Design integration. In particular design contexts, monochrome lettering seamlessly integrates with the overall visual composition, allowing other design elements to take center stage. Here, it becomes part of a lobby design that appeals to the customer in search of understated elegance.
  4. Selective focus. Notice how we used these letters strategically to draw attention to the words by employing a technique known as "revealing text." The text becomes visible only upon closer inspection or from certain viewing angles, creating an element of surprise or intrigue.
