The ADA Defined
To guarantee the civil rights of people no matter their abilities, Congress passed the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) in 1990. Physically disabled individuals often have difficulties accessing facilities and information in the same way as those without these disabilities. The ADA attempts to fix this.
As of the writing of this article, there are two main signage standards. Certain rules were set for signage at the time the ADA was passed. If you operate a building that met the official 1991 rules and you have not made changes since meeting the regulations, you do not have to update anything. On the other hand, when you are installing new markers or adding signage for the first time, you must comply with the 2010 sign standards. ADA requirements do not apply to your temporary signs that will only be posted for fewer than seven days.
What Do You Need to Know?
There is a long list of standards you must meet for your signs. Here are a few of them:
- Size Matter – The size of the symbols and letters on your signs is covered by the ADA guidelines. We don’t have room here to go into the details, but for short distances, two-inch characters should suffice. From greater distances, you will need larger letters.
- Mounting Locations – For single doors, your ADA-compliant signs should be on the side of the latch. For double doors, install the marker to the right of the doors.
- Identify Stairwells – You need to identify each floor with a twelve-inch-by-eighteen-inch sign by elevators and stairwells.
This is by no means an exhaustive list. It’s just meant to give you an idea of what is required. For instance, you must also identify exit doors, entrances, and emergency exit routes with simple to understand markers featuring Braille.
